Spanish Race Wagering

Race wagering, like all other forms of gambling, was legalized in 1977 after the end of the Franco dictatorship. It is regulated on a regional level by the Comunidades Autónomas (Autonomous Communities, CCAA) with some oversight by the central government. Hipódromo de Madrid, also known as La Zarzuela racetrack, is one of the major betting venues in Spain.

The Entrepreneurial Public Entity of State Lotteries and Betting (Entidad Pública Empresarial Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, LAE) offers betting products such as Lototurf and Quíntuple Plus in betting shops and on the internet on the national level, while the Autonomous Regions offer betting within their territories.

Private companies as well as state-controlled entities are allowed to offer betting products. Ontrack betting and offtrack betting are permitted.
